I consider all of my followers on any platform as legitimate. Meaning, they are following because they find value.
I never use automation to follow, like, or make comments. I never follow back just because someone followed me first. I DO follow back when I value their content.
For the clients for whom I do social, I feel a similar strategy is in order.
Social media is for reaching and connecting with people.
When I run social for clients, I treat their audience like people, too. People with whom we want a quality relationship. I’m weird like that. I think we owe it to our followers to create useful content. I think we owe it to them to share other’s content only when we believe there’s value in it.
Growing your audience organically may mean the numbers are small for a while. But it’s the only way to figure out if your content is truly of value or not. It’s also the best way to nurture a sale that leads to an ongoing business relationship. Maybe that’s why I got an email last week from a client that said:
“BIG FYI I’ve sold 14 print books, 43 Kindles and 43 audio books this month so far!!!”
Because I believe in keeping it real.
Respect your followers. Authentically show up. Grow your business the right way.
